About Byron Bay

Situated on the north coast of New South Wales Byron Bay is about 2 hours drive south of Brisbane and a 40 minute drive south of the Gold Coast. The shire offers a year round tropical paradise of beaches, national parks and rainforests with the average temperature in summer of 27 degrees and 21 degrees in winter. Perfect holiday weather!

Byron Bay is known for it's laid-back holiday atmosphere, alternative living and eco-tourism. Byron Bay has plenty of things to see and do and all attractions are close to our accommodation.

When visiting Byron Bay for your holiday you'll never miss the famous Cape Byron Lighthouse as all roads lead to this landmark. The lighthouse stands on Australia's most easterly point on the mainland. The perfect holiday attraction!

While you are in the area, don't neglect the Byron Hinterland - a lush, rolling patchwork of tropical fruit, sugar cane and macadamia farms, state forests, national parks and world heritage listed rainforests. These natural wonders are connected by a network of small towns and villages whose shops, galleries and weekend markets offer an array of arts and crafts, many created by the region's own renowned artists.

Aboriginals first came to the place they called ‘cavvanbah’ which means ‘meeting place’. Captain Cook noticed Cape Byron as he passed by in 1770, and it was he who named the location. However, it was not settled by Europeans until nearly a century later. The village of Cavvanbah was surveyed in 1884 and the jetty built in 1886. The railway came in 1894 and the name then changed from Cavvanbah to Byron Bay.
